This will not appeal to Manospherians. I’ve read the book and seen most of the movie, and really, we Merry Men are far, FAR too kind to EPL. My first reading involved more or less throwing the book across the room after 20 or 30 pages: that’s something like a vaccination with a live virus, just strong enough to build up a healthy immunity to the sheer inanity of that crappy paper-back. Elizabeth Gilbert really does “frivorce” her husband, though it’s not really frivolous. She and her husband agreed to have children once she reached 30, which became a ticking clock that slowly drove Gilbert mad. She does not delve too much into her relationship with her husband, beyond that she felt terrible: chronologically the story begins with her crying on a bathroom floor because she “feels terrible.” She then goes into how the divorce was really bad, because he wanted chunks of her film rights and the like, while she wanted to be peaceful, so peaceful she didn’t even hire a lawyer at first. She was reading about Gandhi at the time, you see, so she wanted to be peaceful. She does remark that she apparently didn’t know jack squat about Gandhi, because Gandhi was a damn lawyer (though not a very good lawyer). Gilbert does not possess a hamster. Deep within her mind dwells a beast unbound by normal requirements for air, rest, and nourishment, nor by any known laws of physics.
