So is your vignette an example of the difficulties of counter-stereotype behavior? Because you a full of those, dude!
And a follow-up question: do you think women are given an easier time when they exhibit counter-stereotype behavior?

@Ms. Bloom, Fuzzie:
Without question, I agree with the argument that says, that Women in our time are still “questioned” as to why they don’t have no Man – and this is especially the case if said Woman is at least passably attractive, on up. Though this line of reasoning has lessened considerably in more recent years, it is still in evidence and again, I for one do not deny it in the least.
Having said that, however, my situation is not at all unique, and pardon me for saying so, NOT an “equal opportunity gender” thing – this is something WOMEN do a heck of a lot more than do Men. Moreover, I think this is done for more than putatively “altruistic” reasons – court politics, as Ciaran has pointed out several times per Beneson’s work, looms large within the activities of Women.
Consider this:
I have found, that invariably, among a group of Women at a particular social gathering, one will be conspicuously unattractive. All the others will range from whatever the highest-ranked on the scale, and there will always be one who is clearly ranked the lowest. Rarely is the case where, say, all the Women in the group will be within a point of each other; what usually happens is that the group will have a several point spread but still attractive, AND THEN, one standout who is easily three points out from the lowest ranked of the attractive, and that can be putting it charitably.
